WRH Satelite Dialysis Unit

The Windsor/Essex region is committed to developing a regional nephrology network to provide dialysis services 'close to home.' As part of this committment, Windsor Regional Hospital operates a dialysis unit at Erie Shores HealthCare. Dialysis 'close to home' provides support and services for individuals with acute and chronic kidney disease in the Leamington and surrounding areas.

The Leamington and Area Satellite Unit provides hemodialysis treatment for 36 patients who reside in the area. The dialysis unit has a total of six stations, which means that six people can receive dialysis treatment at one time. The department is open six days per week for 16 hours.

Patients in Leamington and its surrounding area who require in-centre dialysis treatment have needed to travel to WRH in downtown Windsor three times weekly to receive this important service. The treatment itself can take 4-5 hours, so travelling from Essex County to downtown Windsor further extends the day for these patients.

The Leamington dialysis satellite is collaboratively funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, the two hospitals, local community donations and the Ontario Renal Network.

Through the Windsor and Leamington locations, the WRH program provides dialysis care to 238 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in the Windsor Essex area.
