Reporting to the Operations Manager, Respiratory Therapy, the Respiratory Therapy Extern will work collaboratively with a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) as an unregulated care provider within the hospital. The RT Extern supports high-quality patient care by assisting with respiratory therapy equipment, supplies, and related administrative tasks under RRT direction. Hours of work are Monday to Sunday 0800-2000 & 0800-1600.
This role is open to Respiratory Therapy students in their 2nd or 3rd year of a College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario-approved diploma program.

 

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Support
  • Assist with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating patients.
  • Participate in functional mobility assessments and contribute to care planning and evaluations.
  • Participate in clinical observer ships with limited patient interaction under the direct supervision of a RRT.
  • Perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and assist with hourly rounding and answering call bells.
  • Assist in repositioning patients as necessary to maintain comfort and prevent injuries.
Patient and Environmental Safety
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and hazard free environment for patients.
  • Restock and organize patient care areas to ensure readiness for care delivery.
Equipment Handling & Maintenance
  • Monitor and maintain adequate supply levels.
  • Check and maintain respiratory equipment in airway carts (e.g., difficult airway carts).
  • Ensure equipment is sent to and received from the sterilization-processing unit.
  • Clean, circuit, and calibrate invasive and non-invasive ventilators, as well as other respiratory therapy equipment for patient use.
Team Collaboration
  • Actively participate in the interdisciplinary team to support seamless care delivery.
  • Documentation Assistance
  • Accurately document care activities under supervision and within the scope of practice.

Qualifications

 

Essential Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program (proof of enrollment required).
  • Certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
Preferred Assets:
  • Completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute care area preferred.
  • Demonstrated infection prevention and control practices.
Physical and Cognitive Demands
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods to support patient care.
  • Assisting with patient transfers and repositioning, requiring the ability to lift, bend, and move patients safely.
  • Maintaining clear and accurate documentation within regulatory requirements.
